Thank you so much for your Google review Paul Southgate. This sums up the heart of the Royal Oak that I just had to share it...
Not everything was better in the past. Frankly, quite a lot of it was absolute balls. Tuberculosis, black-and-white television, nylon underwear, petrol stations that only sold petrol, and school dinners that could have been used to pave runways. Nostalgia is a dangerous thing.
But one thing we really did get right back then — and I mean properly, gloriously right — was the after-work pint. That hour between five and six when men in dusty suits and women in pencil skirts would pile into pubs like coals into a steam engine. Not to “network,” not to “decompress” with £14 cocktails in hotel lobbies, but to drink beer, talk rubbish, and shake off the day.
Now? Now the young people — the poor dears — finish work and go straight to a spin class, or worse, home to stare at their phones while pretending to cook something called “protein oats.” The after-work pint is dying, and with it, the very idea of Britain.
Which is why, walking into a pub at half five these days is a gamble. You could find yourself entirely alone (grim). Or worse, you could find yourself alone with someone else — namely, a bloke who’s been there since lunchtime and thinks you’re his new best friend.
But not at The Royal Oak in Clevedon.
I popped in on a Tuesday evening (high risk manoeuvre) and it was exactly what a pub should be. Busy, buzzy, full of regulars parked in their usual seats, pint glasses parked in front of them like faithful old dogs. And speaking of dogs — there was one, a real one, cheerfully mooching around collecting scratches and sausage rolls, reminding everyone what life is actually about.
The drinks were excellent. Proper selection. Not just your usual sad lager and a bottle of flat merlot. Atmosphere? You could slice it and put it in a sandwich. Friendly faces, loud laughter, that glorious hum of people who know each other, but aren’t cliquey enough to make you feel like you’re gatecrashing their wedding.
The Royal Oak made me believe again — in pubs, in people, in Britain itself. It’s a hidden gem, and long may it stay just hidden enough that the protein-oat brigade don’t turn up and start ordering dirty chai espresso martinis.
5pm is alive and well in Clevedon. You just have to be brave enough to look for
